There’s a team made up of designers, and it is located in California. They have invented a container that they used to pull water from air. They can use the water absorbed from surroundings and distribute it to around a hundred people. The architect of the invention, David Hertz, along with Rich Groden, who is his colleague, were given close to two million dollars for this invention. The money was a prize that they won for the competition known as the XPrize for Water Abundance. The competition’s goal is to assist in the world’s shortage of water. There are over two billion people in the world that don’t have any accessible ways to get water that is safe-to-drink and clean. The Defence Intelligence Agency of the US estimated that there would be a shortage in about ten years due to the demand for water.
In 2016, the XPrize competition was first held as a way to address the problem of the water shortage. They rewarded designers that could invent things that could get clean drinking water out of nothing but the air around us. There were almost a hundred teams that entered the competition the same year as Hertz and Groden. Two finalists were told to have their devices tested. The appliances needed to have the ability to obtain at least two thousand litres of water each day, but with each litre costing less than two cents each. The press release stated that their team, which is known as Skysource Alliance, bagged the grand prize. Their team won because it showed that it was significantly more efficient at giving people access to clean drinking water.
How The Water Is Harvested
The creation of their team, Skysource/Skywater Alliance, is better known as WeDew. The device is a mixture of two separate components. The first component is called Skywater, which is a generator that is made to act like a cloud. The Skywater has Groden as a co-inventor, and the component works by cooling warm air and puts aa the condensation inside of a tank. There is a water fountain or tap that you can use to access water in the basin of the shipping container.
The air going through condensation will need electricity, which is why there is a bio-mass gas producer that was integrated into the system by designers. The gasifiers will act as an energy source at a low cost. The gasifiers would recieve organic material to produce a mixture of gases. The gasses that make up that mixture are hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. The device uses those gasses as its fuel source, which produce that fuel by vaporising the organic materials. You can put all sorts of biomass in the gasifier, like pine tree bark or even coconut shells. There will be humidity and heat created by the vaporisation of the biomass, and that will make the water-harvesting process more efficient. The gasifier will also have a byproduct, biochar, which is a substance that’s rich in carbon. The biochar can be incorporated into the soil to help boost plant growth.
